Fortnite adds a raid boss to battle royale for Halloween

Fortnite has been more than just a battle royale game for quite a while now, and Epic is always looking for ways to spice things up. For this year's Fortnitemares, the game's annual Halloween event, the developer added another twist on the formula by including a raid boss in Fortnite Battle Royale.

The new boss is the Storm King and he should look familiar to anyone who's played Fortnite: Save the World recently. In the Battle Royale version of the fight, around 20 players drop onto the map toward the center island. After a few seconds the Storm King himself spawns, and uses similar mechanics to his Save the World cousin.

Players have to dodge around his energy beams, falling meteors, and army of zombies, all while taking shots at weak spots that appear on his body. After you destroy all three spots, you get the chance to damage him directly.

Fortnite's boss battle is almost exactly like the raid fights that have existed for years in games like World of Warcraft and Destiny. These are bigger-than-normal PVE events that require players to work together to take down the boss.

This kind of activity may be a first for Fortnite: Battle Royale but it feels at home. With modes like Squads, and Team Rumble, players are already used to working together, protecting each other, and reviving their downed teammates. This mode just changes the enemy from other players to one very big monster.

Unfortunately, the Storm King mode has been temporarily disabled. It's unclear why Epic disabled the mode, but this post will be updated when the mode returns to Fortnite.
